Tip Treasure

DD Hannah found these at the tip in Brighton and knew I'd give them a new home. The foreign stamps caught her eye - they are Russian. Inside the envelope was the letter and photograph which, although not related, obviously belonged to the same person. Sadly we concluded that this was a house clearance. How tragic that someone's possessions should end up scattered amongst the debris. The letter is from V. Popov - Ambassador of the USSR and is dated November 1985. He is writing to a Mrs. Humphrey's of King George Drive, Wallasey and it is thanking her for her 'warm congratulations on the occasion of the 69th Anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution'. The photograph is signed 'to Captain & Mrs. Humprhey' from Chan Jane Yu & Chan Hui Koung' and is dated 1961. It also has their Chinese signatures on the reverse. I wonder who they all were and what happened to them all. One Woman's litter is obviously another woman's treasure.I can't part with them and so, I'm going to tuck them in amongst my hoard of family photographs and keep this other person's memories safe for them. Thanks go to Hannah for having her eyes and heart open. Its nice to know I've raised another generation of skip rats!

  1. I always feel sad when I see photos just neglected like this too--these were all treasures at one time to someone and should remain so--I love that you recognize that!

  2. How sad that memories of a life get discarded in such a way...and how good that you will put them to good use in some caring way! x

  4. Well done, Hannah. You have trained her well! Wonderful treasure, and yes, it does get you thinking about these people and how such things end up on a tip. Luckily you have rescued it from oblivion.

  7. Wonderful sentiment. I love that as artists, we honor these people and their treasures even after they are gone. By incorporating these cast away photos and other treasures into our art work, these momentos seem to take on a new life, and live on in a place of honor, telling their story.
